Medieval Castle Concept

Medieval Castle with Mound and Ramp

Medieval Siege Set

The option with a mound and ramp enables more possibilities including separating the mound so it becomes a hill for the attacking army.

The top slides off the mound and the ramp and dissassembled castle will fit inside. The 'dungeon hole makes a useful carrying handle.

This set was designed to demonstrate siege tactics yet avoid play becoming injurious. The trebuchet can lightly lob its charge over the castle wall, but cannot have its power increased, so it is far safer than a catapult. At the same time it demonstrates a scientific principle in a most impressive way!

The siege tower drawbridge works and both it and the battering ram rumble convincingly up to their task. Two siege ladders are included and I have found that most makes of toy knight will 'clip' onto them.

This grand display is made from three basic castle sets, one with a mound and it shows the amazing flexibility of this toy. It is made of rubber wood faced MDF by Pintoys of Thailand and distributed in the UK by John Crane Ltd.

The new siege set is shown breaching the castle walls! More will be added to this concept in future years.

The overall dimensions of the basic castle on its mound is:
65 x 65 x 45 cm high (26" x 26" x x18")
The overall dimensions without the mound is:
57 x 57 x 23 cm high (22" x 22" x 9")

Castle only

As I indicated on the first page, I have misgivings about designing war toys and this set defines my limits. At the same time I don't believe you can teach peaceful conflict resolution to a person who has not come to understand their own capacity and feelings for violence.

While I would not design modern, realistic looking war toys, I cannot totally dismiss their role in child's play. Children need to work through these things and denying a child say, a toy gun can turn into an issue which the child focusses on until it becomes an unhealthy obsession.

The basic castle is a set of four towers, three walls, a drawbridge section and staircases which can be assembled a number of different ways.
